Choosing quantity surveying software you can still defend a year later
Quantity surveying software is bought for take-off speed and kept for something else entirely: whether, eight months later, you can explain how a rate was built and why a variation was measured the way it was. Speed wins the demo. Defensibility wins the dispute, and the dispute is the expensive part.

The reuse question
Ask what happens to a rate library between projects. If rates are per-file, every project starts from someone's memory of the last one, and the firm accumulates no institutional pricing knowledge at all. A library that carries forward is the difference between ten years of experience and one year repeated ten times.
Where most tools stop
Most QS software is written for the moment the tender is submitted, which is roughly a third of the surveyor's year. Variations, valuations and final accounts are the other two-thirds and they need the bill to still be live, still be structured, and still remember its own history. How to prepare a BOQ that survives the site is about that survival.
